Ewan Lawry, a deputy chairman of the Ceredigion Conservative Association and committee member of Holy Trinity Church in Aberystwyth, recently wrote to The Right Rev Penberthy to express his disappointment at the Bishop's tweet which told her followers: 'never never never trust a Tory'.
The first female Bishop in the Church in Wales, Bishop Joanna Penberthy used her personal account, since shut down, to make the remark.
The leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, also tweeted that the Bishop's views will be troubling to many church-goers in West Wales.
Ewan, a PhD student at Aberystwyth University, was featured in Cambrian News today:
'Though I am aware that this would not have arisen without the Twitter pile-on, and I am keen to not be aligned with anyone being nasty to the Bishop, I feel it is worth emphasising the point that our faith is beyond and above petty political divides. I am sure that there is a lesson in this for all of us about the dangers of hasty tweets but it is so regrettable that a great many of my co-religionists are now unavoidably aware of the contempt with which we are held by our clergy.'
The Right Rev Penberthy later apologised on the Diocese of St Davids website and shut down her Twitter.
Ceredigion Conservatives welcome all people of faith as well as those of none.
